Imphal, November 02 2020:
The Communist Party of India, Manipur State Council (CPI-MSC) has reacted sharply against the disconnection of the National Highway 37 with the snapping of a connecting bridge built over Irang river yesterday.
The CPI-MSC, in a statement not only shared the grief over the suspected death of a driver of the ill fated truck which fell into the river with the splitting of the bridge yesterday but also demanded the State Government to repair or reconstruct the bridge on war footing.
Even bridges from British era are being in use, said the CPI-MSC while questioning as to how the bridge constructed in 2010 following a bomb attack by a militant group, snapped and plunged into the river.
The short life of the bridge hints at nothing but lack of quality control and sincerity on the part of the officials concerned and the then State Government, it said.
Deriding the tall claims of the Prime Minister and Ministers for Surface Transport that the National highways in the State have been fully constructed and repaired, the CPI-MSC questioned how those claims were made when there are many connecting bridges in dilapidated and poor state.
The alleged order of the State Government to limit the weight of the transport vehicles plying along the highways upto 20 tons is condemnable as it is leading to scarcity of commodities in the State and eventually price rice, it continued.
The State Government and the ruling party should act to justify their claims of giving the best connectivity to the people of the State in the recent years, it said.
COVID-19 pandemic has done a lot of damage already and the Government should ensure no further burden is imposed on the people, the statement continued.
