Imphal, September 02 2014:
Even as Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam rushed to New Delhi to apprise Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on the evolving situation in the State and to bring about a solution, the Centre is said to be making all out efforts to ensure that normal life is not affected in Manipur following the call for indefinite ban on vehicular traffic along national and state highways in Naga-dominated areas in the state from Thursday.
According to Education Minister M Okendro, who is also the spokesperson of the Government of Manipur, Chief Minister O Ibobi and Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam left Imphal for New Delhi this afternoon and the two leaders are expected to meet Rajnath in the national capital tonight.
They will apprise the Union Home Minister on the issue concerning the indefinite National Highways bandh to be imposed by the United Naga Council (UNC) from September 4 in protest against the killing of two civilians in police firing in Ukhrul on August 30 and return to Imphal tomorrow.
Okendro asserted that the whole problem is the handiwork of the criminal activities perpetrated by NSCN-IM such as extortions, murders and tortures which are being witnessing in many parts of Manipur.
The recent killing of an Autonomous District Council (ADC) Member in Ukhrul led to the deployment of security personnel in Ukhrul, he contended.
Meanwhile, a report filed by PTI from New Delhi said that the Centre is making effort to ensure that normal life is not affected in Manipur following a call for indefinite ban on vehicular traffic on national and state highways in Naga-dominated areas in the state from Thursday.
As part of the initiative, Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh will arrive in the national capital soon to apprise Home Minister Rajnath Singh about the evolving situation in the state as well as the steps taken to resolve the crisis.
Home Ministry officials are in constant touch with Manipur government officials and offered to provide all help to deal with the situation, the PTI report said quoting official sources, and added that the Central government is very keen to ensure that supply of essential commodities are not affected following the road blockade.
