OBC, SC students demand

Convenor of Joint Students Co-ordinator Committee, Premananda today urged the authority concerned to review the seat reservation system for Manipur University entrance examination in the interest of OBC and SC students.
Speaking to reporters in Kangleipak Students Association head office in Takhel Leikai, Premananda asserted that Manipur University being a Central University must follow the norms that are being adopted by all the Central Universities in the country.
He further added that to be precise the new rule is applicable only for the States that fall under the Sixth Schedule and Manipur is not among them.
Premananda also stated that a memorandum would be submitted to President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard.
He stated that the Governor, Chief Minister and MU authority must clarify how such rule has been been permitted to be implemented.
Condemning the new rule, OBC and SC students of Manipur University today staged a sit-in protest in the University campus.
Yengkhom Rajiv, a student of MU, asserted that until the matter has been resolved, it would not allow the University to conduct the entrance exam for MA, MSc and MCom.
According to rules directed, reservation for general category is 50 percent, OBC-27.5 percent, SC-15 percent, SC-7.5 percent respectively.
However, the new rule applies 50 percent for general category, 17 percent for OBC, 2 percent for SC and 31 percent for ST.
