As part of a Nationwide movement, the All Manipur Mid-Day Meal Workers' Union has submitted memoranda addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi via Deputy Commissioners of several districts today.
Representatives of the union submitted the memoranda via Deputy Commissioners of Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Jiribam and Kakching district.
The memoranda highlighted the grievances of the mid-day meal workers during the pandemic, said the union in a statement.
Asserting that the mid-day meal workers are not being paid for the period when the schools are closed, the union demanded that they be paid Rs 7,500 per month during the COVID-19 pandemic period.
Each mid-day meal worker's family should be provided with 10 kilograms of food grain and "all essentials per person" .
The workers engaged in shelter homes or isolation centres should be paid Rs 600 per day and all children should be given rations in enhanced quantity, it said.
The mid-day meal workers should be given work under the MGNREGA.
They can prepare meals at the worksites.
Minimum wage of Rs 24,000 per month should be paid and they should be regularised and given pension after retirement, said the union.
