Imphal, January 22, 2012:
Manipur Chief Secretary DS Poonia officially launched the Cycle on Rent, giving the facility of renting a cycle to the people of the state to watch the beauty of the historical Kangla in all its aspects.
The launching ceremony of the Cycle on Rent was done under the initiative of Cycle Club on the occasion of its 1st foundation day.
Speaking on the occasion, DS Poonia said that in recent past people of the state mostly used cycles for required purposes.
But now the people have opted for vehicles run on petrol and diesel.
This increase in the use of motor vehicles directly harms the environment by polluting the air.
The use of cycles not only decreases the rate of harming the environment but also is good for the health.
In developed countries like China, USA and Australia, there are separate cycle lanes which are exclusively meant for those people driving cycles.
The Manipur Cycle Club in collaboration with the PDA and Municipality should also work to construct separate cycle lane in the state, he added.
A vintage cycle rally was also flagged off from Kangla, western gate by Dr RK Ranjan, Director, College Development Council, MU who is also the President of Manipur Cycle Club.
The rally, after passing through Sanjenthong, New Checkon, Minuthong and Khuyathong finally assembled at Manipur Press Club where the main function was held.
The function was graced by Dr HNK Sharma, VC, MU, Yambem Laba, Advisor, Manipur Cycle Club and Dr RK Ranjan as the Chief Guest, President and Guest of Honour respectively.
The annual publication of Manipur Cycle Club entitled "Cycle for Life" was released by the Chief Guest on the occasion.
