Accused in rape of Manipuri girl held

After five days of intense campaign for justice and pressure mounted on higher police officials of Delhi, the accused in the rape of a Manipuri girl at Dwarka in New Delhi on January 18 was arrested by Delhi police today.
According to information provided by NE Helpline, the breakthrough came after a team of NE Helpline submitted memorandum to National Commission for Women and met the Joint Commission Police (Southern Delhi Range, Amulya Patnaik).
It may be recalled here that a 20-year-old Manipur girl was raped by a man who came in a car and offered her lift from Gurgaon to Mahipalpur while she was waiting for public bus at around 8.45 pm on January 18.The man drove the car to an isolated area in Dwarka Sector 20 and raped her inside it.
After the rape, the man also attempted to murder her.
The matter was reported to Dwarka Sector 23 police station and a Bank ATM card belonging to the man who committed the crime was discovered by Delhi police from the spot.
From the recovered Bank ATM card, the identity of the rapist was established as Anuj Saini.
The North East Support Centre & Helpline has sought help from National Commission Women.
The delegation has also submitted memorandums to National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, National Commission for Minorities copies to Manipur State Women Commission, Delhi Commission of Police and Director General Police of Manipur.

Meanwhile, Manipur Students' Federation (MSF) has strongly condemned the incident and the failure of the Delhi police to take up prompt action.
In a statement, Publicity Secretary of MSF Th Shyamsunder Luwang observed that if such incidents occur repeated, the day would not be far when the people of Manipur start feeling the heat of administration of India directly.
