Border flare-up: Nagaland Government sets up inquiry panel

Kohima, August 18 2014: Reeling from the indefinite economic blockade imposed by several organizations in Assam in protest against the violent flare-up on the Assam-Nagaland border on August 12 and 13 resulting in the death of 11 villagers from Assam, the Nagaland Government has ordered an inquiry into the causes and circumstances that led to the situation.

Over 1,000 vehicles bound for Nagaland are stranded on the NH 39 due to the indefinite economic blockade called by the Asom Jatiyabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and several other organizations at Rongajan in protest against the border violence, which entered the fifth day on Sunday.

A team of the Wokha district administration of Nagaland held talks with the protesters and requested them to withdraw the blockade on Sunday, but in vain.

Nagaland chief secretary issued a notification on August 16, setting up an inquiry committee consisting of the agriculture commissioner and secretary Imkonglemba Aoas, the convenor, range IGP P F Zeliang, joint secretary and principal director of school education Kesonyu Yhome, joint secretary of justice l Namjok Konyak and deputy commissioner, headquarters, Vikishe Sema.

According to a Government statement, the inquiry committee will identify the circumstances leading to the situation, resulting in burning of villages, damage to property and loss of lives, identify the motives and reasons for such actions leading to these crimes and whether it was the handiwork of individuals, groups of people or organizations.

The committee will also identify the people responsible for committing these crimes and suggest remedial measures to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
