Editor of The Sangai Express (Manipuri edition) Khogendra Khomdram and ISTV Chief Editor Brozendro Ningomba were conferred with the Best Editor's Award, 2018 for print and electronic media respectively by the All Manipur Muslim Girls' Students Union (AMMGSU) .
Public Hospital and Research Institute, Imphal, Fancier Abhiram Higher Secondary School, Thoubal and COMET School, Changangei, Imphal bagged the State Health Excellence Award, Best Education Partner Award and State Education Excellence Award for this year.
The awards were distributed at the 10th foundation day celebration of AMMGSU held today at Imphal Hotel, North AOC.
Speaking at the gathering, Ex-Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam appealed to all communities in the State not to hurt sentiments of another community while preserving and protecting their respective identities, cultures and other values.
He also appealed to all community leaders to cooperate with each other and strengthen the fraternal bond between the hills and valley.
Gaikhangam who is also the MLA of Nungba A/C went on to state that community leaders in the State should sincerely try to root out any misunderstanding and misconception whenever such things arise between any community.
Stressing on the importance of uplifting the minorities and women in order to bring progress in the society and the State, he underscored the importance of maintaining suitable reservation quotas for the minorities and imparting proper education to girl children.
The ex-Deputy Chief Minister also lauded the role taken by AMMGSU towards fostering the Meitei Pangal community and women.
Govindas Konthoujam who also attended the function as guest of honour opined that social practices that hinder the progress of a society should be discarded while those customs and traditions which promote growth and development should be preserved and promoted.
He pointed out that quality education which can mould good character, strengthen minds and expand intellect is required for building a vibrant society which can stand on its own.
Saying that big changes can be witnessed in Meitei Pangal community, particularly women after the formation of AMMGSU, Govindas further asked all to support the students' organization so that it can march ahead.
Retired IAS officer AR Khan while delivering the presidential speech at the function contended that deprivation of appropriate reservation to the minorities will lead to retardation of the State as a whole.
Emergence of a few MCS officers, doctors and engineers does not mean Meitei Pangal community can compete with other communities of the State, he said and added Meitei Pangals need to work harder to be at par with the other advanced communities in the State.
He lamented that an organization has falsely charged Meitei Pangal community of supporting illegal immigrants through media and further appealed to all not to make false assumption as well as to avoid provocation of the said community.
As a part of the function, awards and mementos were also distributed to few individuals and institutions for their achievements in their respective fields.
Representatives of many CSOs, intellectuals and social activists too spoke at the gathering.
