Ukhrul, April 26 2012:
In a town where alcohol flows free even from a pan shop, it is time for reckoning if the decision of the Tangkhul Youth Council (TYC) is anything to go by and really meant business that is, to come down heavily on the illegal sale of drinks and substance abuse.
In a press handout issued Thursday, Khareingam Shaiza, secretary of TYC's Co-ordination Committee on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (CCADA) has stated that it had resolved to clamp down on the open sale of alcohol and substance abuse in Ukhrul district.
The decision on the issue was taken in the committee meeting held on April 21 last.
The CCADA has also issued directives that alcohol and any other intoxicants should not be sold to students and under-aged children, while further restricting "chewing of tobacco and smoking by teachers/students in the school campus and outside school environment with (sic) uniform" .
For the denizens in Ukhrul, the decision will be viewed as a breather as it came following escalating sale of alcohol and drunken nuisance involving school children became rampant in the town.
The issue was first reported by this newspaper sometime last year.
In Ukhrul or to be more precisefrom shops in Mahadev to the district headquarters' town, the rampant sale of alcohol picked up its pace from mid 2012.Nevertheless, the civil societies, let alone the law enforcement agencies, have hitherto turned a blind eye on the whole racket.
For now, atleast, a civil society group has resolved to initiate action against the illegal business.
In a recent interaction, Ukhrul superintendent of police K Kabib had made a verbal statement to "crack down" on illegal sale of alcohol and drug menace in the district.
The law enforcement, however, is yet to show its action.
Meanwhile, TYC also informed that every house owner are "to act as guardian to tenants so as to avoid from happening any unwanted activities" .
