TNL opposes MHVA election

The Tangkhul apex body Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has registered strong opposition to the State Government's move to hold village authority election in respect of Island Tangkhul village under Saikul subdivision, Senapati district on March 10 under Manipur Hills Village Authority Act, 1956 .
"We have separate (Tangkhul) customary practices and law, every village has its own leaders, the headman or village Hanga members (VA).
We do not recognise foreign Act such as Manipur Hills Village Authority Act, 1956 within our TNL jurisdiction," the TNL stated.
The TNL further directed the villagers of Island to abstain from Village authority election schedule for March 10 .
In case of any one defying the TNL administrative order and the decision of TNL Assembly, the TNL will deal the matter seriously under Tangkhul customary law, it warned while adding that MHVA is not honoured within its jurisdiction.
The TNL in any circumstances will contest and oppose tooth and nail the implementation of this Act in Tangkhul area, it said.
Meanwhile, speaking to reporters here, TNL President Artax A Shimray said that the TNL is strictly monitoring the Manipur State Government policy towards the hill people.
He said that any imposition of State decision to our land without consultation any consultation with the concerned people will never be accepted or tolerated.
He also said that the TNL Assembly has passed budget of Rs 81,74,820 for the year 2014-15 .
Further the Assembly has endorsed to take up the issues relating to the district including the State Govt's attempt to forcefully swap away the border land, border fencing, new police boundary demarcation and Mapithel dam.
