International Day of Older Persons

The Tangkhul older persons today showcased Tangkhul cultures in order to revive the tradition and pass it on to the younger generation during a function organised to observe the International Day of Older Persons 2015 at TNL ground, Ukhrul, yesterday.
Traditional way of making fire, Yung Khangva (youth carrying main components required to build a Tangkhul traditional house), Lengvai Kaphung (youth carrying paddy from field to show his strength), womenfolk grinding rice, blowing of traditional trumpet, folksong and folkdance were displayed during the programme.
The Deputy Commissioner, who attended the function as the chief guest expressed his gratitude to the older persons for their parental care and efforts in keeping the Tangkhul tradition alive.
Raringlui Shimzing from Khangkhui Khullen (101), who was the oldest person among the gathering, was honoured during the programme.
Over 1000 older persons of the district attended the programme.
Remembering and honouring the senior citizens in our community, Senapati district also observed the International Day for Older Persons at the Multipurpose Hall, near new DC Office Complex with ADC chairman ML Markson as the chief guest.
Organized for the first time by the District Social Welfare Office, the observation was participated by more than 300 older persons of different villages.
The programme was also graced by DSWO AS Robinson, ADC Member Sakhrii, Senior Citizen Forum, Senapati president Akha.
During the programme, shawls were distributed to older persons.
Speaking at the occasion, Markson said, "We cannot forget what our elders did for us to change our society for betterment.
We should contribute more for the welfare of older persons" .
