Sr Accountant sent to CBI custody

Imphal, February 01 2020: Senior Accountant Yumnam Sarat has been remanded for 7 days in the custody of CBI Anti Corruption Bureau (till February 7) by Special Judge, CBI, Imphal East, today.

Yumnam Sarat, Senior Accountant at the Office of the Accountant General, Imphal, was arrested by CBI yesterday following a raid at his Wangkhei Angom Lei-kai residence as well as his office, after an FIR was registered against him under Prevention of Corruption Act for amassing disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 1,40,37,387 between 2010 and 2019 .

Sarat was produced before the Court by Inspector Kh Bedajeet of CBI /ACB, Imphal, along with a prayer to remand the Senior Accountant to police custody remand for 10 days.

CBI submitted that during the course of investigation, a search warrant was obtained for carrying out raid at Sarat's residence at Wangkhei Angom Leikai and his office premises at AG Office.

During the search at Wangkhei Angom Leikai, a huge number of bank passbooks, 78 pension books, ATM cards, cheque book, documents of immoveable properties, insu- rance documents and cash amounting to Rs 31,14,710 and some gold ornaments were seized.

During interrogation, Sarat admitted that he had purchased a three storey RCC building at Wangkhei Angom Leikai at Rs 1.19 crore in 2016.He also admitted that the construction of another multi-storey RCC building is going on at Hafiz Hatta, New Checkon, Wangkhei Khunou, the CBI explained.

On questioning, Sarat did not disclose the source of the Rs 31,14,710 seized from his residence in cash, as well as the sources of money for purchasing the building at Wangkhei Angom Leikai and the multi-storey RCC building being constructed at Hafiz Hatta, New Checkon.

Citing that the seized pass books, pension books, ATM cards, cheques etc need to be properly investigated, the CBI prayed for remanding the arrested Senior Accountant for 10 days in police custody.

During the proceeding, the Court asked Sarat if he has any ailment to which he claimed that he has hypertension, diabetes and kidney stones.

After going through the prayer of the CBI and the submissions, the Court decided to remand Sarat to seven days in police custody (till February 7) .

The Court also directed the IO to get Sarat medically examined every 48 hours or as and when the need arises.
