Shortage of water, irregular power supply plague Kumbi

Kumbi, Bishnupur district, which is located around 55 kms from Imphal has been facing acute shortage of potable water and lack of regular power supply.
Speaking exclusively to The Sangai Express, Khangabam Pamheiba Meitei, president, Khuga Athletic and Library Association said that failure to provide even potable water when other parts of the State are moving towards development is very unfortunate.
Construction of a water supply scheme under the PHED was completed last year but it is yet to be inaugurated.
Installation of water pipes has also not completed till now, said Pamheiba.
"Till date, we fetch water from nearby ponds and river for drinking and other purposes.
Though, it satiate our needs to some extent, we would suffer from water borne diseases and other related illnesses," Pamheiba stated.
Kumbi Municipal Council Chairperson M Bineshwar said that though the Power Department has been privatised, Kumbi area has not received more than 8 hours of electricity till today.
He also urged the authority concerned to take up immediate steps to implement the pre-paid electrical power system in Kumbi as well.
He added that road construction work in Kumbi Municipal Council Ward 9 area under the Ministry of Urban Development is underway.
To ensure qualitative aspect is maintained during the construction work, people of the area should collectively monitor the work.
Khuga Athletic and Library Association general secretary K Sidhanta said that proper waste disposal site is not available.
Therefore, people usually dispose wastes in river which has increased the water pollution level day by day.
He added that failure to expedite the ongoing irrigation system construction in Ithei Loukhong has also affected Kumbi people during the rainy season.
He urged the authority concerned to consider the grievances of the people and initiate developmental projects in Kumbi sincerely.
