Imphal, February 14 2013:
As a part of the National Food Security Mission 2012-13, a one-day farmers training cum tools and equipment distribution function was held today at Ukhrul mini secretariat under the aegis of the Ukhrul District Agriculture Officer.
The programme was attended by Agriculture Minister Md Abdul Naseer, Tribal Welfare Parliamentary Secretary Victor Keishing and MLA Preshow Shimray as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking at the function, Md Abdul Naseer claimed that Manipur can be made self-reliant in food grains if only 50 per cent of the funds invested in Agriculture Department is utilised properly.
He declared that a godown for DAO Ukhrul would be constructed in 2013-14 for storing agricultural tools and equipment.
Preshow Shimray asserted farmers need to switch to modern agricultural technologies for better yield in view of the increasing population.
Nevertheless, he advised farmers to use organic manure instead of chemical fertilizers which cause harmful side effects on human body.
Later, water pump-sets and sprayers were distributed to farmers.
This was followed by lectures given by experts on different topics.
