Imphal, February 14 2013:
The State Cabinet has today resolved to divide Electricity Department into two companies and covert the department into a corporate.
The Cabinet meeting presided by Chief Minister O Ibobi studied the assessment report submitted by SBI CAP which was hired by the State Government as a consultant in connection with the move to convert Electricity Department to a corporate.
The State Cabinet agreed to set up two separate companies DISCOM (Distribution Company) which would handle the distribution section, and HoldCo (Holding Company) which would handle generation and transmission sections, informed a source.
It was also decided to formulate a human resource plan regarding absorption of the existing employees of the department into the two proposed companies as well as the retirement benefits which would be extended to them.
Significantly the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission for Manipur and Mizoram had earlier written to the State Government that Manipur is lagging far behind other States in power sector reforms, resulting in its abysmal performance.
The Cabinet meeting further decided to ban the sale and storage of smokeless tobacco products.
The meeting agreed on issuing stringent instructions to law enforcing agencies to enforce the ban effectively.
Another resolution of the meeting was holding Budget session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly from March 6 .
The Cabinet gave its consent to raise the amount given to Imphal Municipal Council as grant-in-aid.
The Cabinet further discussed about handing over the case of seizure of drugs worth around Rs 1.4 crores from Tulihal Airport to the CBI.
But a definite decision was deferred to the next Cabinet meeting.
However, a similar proposal to convert Tourism Department to a corporate was declined by the Cabinet, added the source.
