NPF decries MU's decision

Imphal, October 11 2016: The Naga Peoples'Front (NPF) has said that the Congress led State Government is not concerned about the common good and collective progress of the State and strongly condemned the decision adopted by the Academic Council of Manipur University regarding reservation for ST students in admission to the varsity.

While expressing concern with the prevailing situation in Manipur University, NPF president and former MLA Awangbow Newmai during a press meet at the party's office at Dewlahland said that the decision of the Academic Council to adopt the Central Educational Institutions Reservation in Admission Act 2006 for the current academic session is totally biased and in violation of the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act 2012 and order of the High Court of Manipur.

The Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act 2012 reserved 3 1 per cent seats for Scheduled Tribe, 2 per cent for Scheduled Caste and 17 per cent for OBCs, based on the population of the State.

He said the decision of the Academic Council is nothing but suppression of justice and denial of Constitutional rights of the tribals.

Awangbow also urged the MU Academic Council to revoke their decision and bring the present imbroglio to a logical conclusion.

He also appealed to all the student organisations to avoid violence, arson and destruction of the university properties and attempt to resolve the problem amicably.

On the new Draft Bill for regulation of non-locals in the State, the NPF president said the State Government did the right thing by not introducing the Manipur Regulation of Non-Local People Act, 2016 .

He urged the State Government to consider their views on ILP Bill as expressed on August 23 this year.

He said the rights and privileges granted to the hill people by the Constitution will be infringed upon if new laws are enacted.

"We have not yet confirmed the number of candidates nor the ACs from which they would contest in the upcoming Assembly election", Awangbow' said.

Lashing out at the Congress led State Government, the NPF president said district councils dominated by Congress are given adequate security escorts while, those dominated by other parties are given none.

The condition of National Highways, especially in the hill areas, is in a pathetic condition.

Major portions of the road are infested with large potholes making it difficult for commuters to travel.

"If the Congree continue to rule the State, the people will continue to suffer", he said.

Ex-MLA Samuel Risom and NPF advisor Morung Makunga were also present at the press conference.
