Imphal, October 11 2016:
The All Manipur Tribal Union (AMTU) has expressed its deepest concern over the Manipur University (MU) admission seat reservation row which has taken a turn for the worse.
General secretary of AMTU, Romeo Bungdon expressed regret that all the tribal students have left the varsity expressing resentment with the decision of the Academic Council of MU which clearly violated the UGC's directive to abide by the 2012 reservation policy in admission to the varsity which is 31 percent for tribals.
"It is sensible to advise the MU authority to recall its ruling on the matter as it must not overide the Constitutional Act though it may have certain limited autonomy.
No State, village, Autonomous District Council or autonomous institutes can violate Constitutional Acts," Romeo Bungdon said.
The AMTU leader then cautioned that the repercussion "could be highly volatile which will ignite emotional alienation and socio-political distrust and to the extent of socio-political disintegration demanding a separate tribal State.
Abiding by Constitutional provisions is the sole key towards peace and communal harmony in a chaotic State like Manipur" .
He urged that the reservation row be resolved immediately for peaceful co-existence.
