Imphal, February 01 2020:
The United Tribal Civil Organisations' Manipur (UTCOM) has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, Tribal Affairs and Hills Minister, Hill Areas Committee Chairman and the Chief Secretary to ensure that the ADC election is held before rainy season.
A statement issued by the general secretary of UTCOM conveyed that the memorandum explained that the month of June is a rainy month and there are frequent landslides, falling of trees, muddy roads etc during the said season which make it extremely difficult to carry out election campaign and voting process in the far flung hill areas/villages.
Most of the hill villages have no proper roads and the villagers live in difficult terrains, it explained.
It then opposed the resolution passed by the Hill Areas Committee (HAC) on January 16 this year (recommended on January 29) to hold the upcoming ADC election in the month of November.
Such a decision is against the wishes of the hill people as November is harvesting season, specially for the hill areas, it reasoned, suggesting the State Government to hold the election either in April or May.
