Imphal, January 31, 2012:
A one day orientation programme on Human Trafficking, organised by the Department of Social Welfare, GoM , was held at Sagolmang High School today.
The orientation programme was graced by Joykumar Wahengbam, Human Rights activist and K Pradipkumar, Member Secretary, Child Welfare Committee, Imphal East as Chief Guest and President respectively.
L Pishak, Chairperson, Child Welfare Committee, Bishnupur district was also present on the occasion as resource person.
Speaking on the occasion Joykumar Wahengbam said that in the case of human trafficking, the victim not only loses her physical self but also her human rights.
In India, the Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act was enacted in the year 1956 to prevent human trafficking.
But inspite of this Act and various other similar acts, human trafficking continues.
The main reason behind not being able to arrest the persons involved in human trafficking is due to the involvement of politicians, police and bureaucrats, alleged.
He further said that the case of human trafficking is mainly connected with women and children.
Women and children of the state are lured with promises of employment with high salary outside the state and are abused in illegal professions.
Trafficking is also mainly done to women and children of the hills.
