Imphal, April 18 2012:
The crushing defeat of Congress party in the election to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) would certainly have bearings on the forthcoming Lok Sabha Election, Shantikumar Sharma, President of BJP, Manipur Pradesh has predicated.
Talking to Hueiyen Lanpao, Shantikumar Sharma said that the election to the MCD was conducted by dividing Delhi into three Municipal Councils, namely North Delhi, South Delhi and East Delhi.
Out of the total 272 seats, BJP came out as the single largest party securing 138 seats.
Congress got only 78 seats, Samajwadi Party got 15 and another 41 seats went to the Independent candidates.
And out of the 41 independent seats, 36 of them have joined BJP, thus totaling the tally of the to 174 seats, he added.
Pointing out that Delhi has been ruled by the Congress under the leadership of Sheila Dixit for the last 14 years, Shantikumar asserted that with such a big history, the defeat of Congress in the MCD Election clearly indicates that the people of Delhi are fed up with the Congress led UPA government and has no more faith in it.
The reason for the people to reject the Congress is perhaps because of the highly corrupted nature of the party and for causing serious trouble to the general public by increasing the price of essential commodities, he observed.
Even though Delhi is a small place, but considering the sensitiveness of the area and the number of intellectuals residing here, the election to the MCD cannot be taken lightly.
It would definitely have an impact on the people, he said.
He also pointed out even if various political parties may be supporting the UPA government; there is every likelihood that the UPA government would collapse soon.
