Imphal, September 13 2018:
A number of scheme workers have launched various agitations, demanding an increase in wages and cautioned more agitations if the demand is not met at the earliest.
During a press meet held at Irabot Bhawan today, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) Manipur State Committee general secretary L Sotinkumar conveyed that AITUC has launched various Nation-wide agitations demanding a raise of scheme workers' wages.
As part of numerous agitations, lakhs of labours/scheme workers gathered and protested continuously for three days in front of the Parliament last year, he said.
Before that specific protest, there was a talk between the Labour Minister and the representatives of Central Trade Union.
In that meeting, the representatives demanded an increment of Rs 18,000 per month at the minimum for the workers, but the Minister assured an increment of only Rs 10,000.Though there was no agreement between the two parties, the Central Govt included Rs 10,000 in the budget for the increment of the workers' wages, he said.
L Sotinkumar also condemned the recent statement of the Prime Minister, who said that the wages of the workers have increased, when the increased amount was just Rs 1,500, contrary to the demand of the Rs 18,000 and cautioned that the workers are all set to launch various agitations, if the demand is not met.
He further said that a National conference will be held on September 28 to discuss further course of action.
The amount received by the workers is from the Central Government and the State Govts don't provide their due shares when the majority of the works will be done by the Asha workers, VDF, Mid Day Meal workers, Anganwadi workers, he said and urged the authorities concerned to meet the Chief Minister at the earliest to discuss the inclusion of the State Govt shares for the convenience of the workers.
