Youth lynched on charge of lifting two wheeler

Imphal, September 13 2018: A youth was lynched by a mob on the charge of attempting to lift a Honda Activa today at Tharoijam Awang Leikai, Imphal West district under Patsoi police station.

According to information culled from the spot, the owner on seeing that his Honda Activa scooter was being pushed by an individual after breaking the lock raised an alarm which led to extensive search in the area by people of the neighbourhood and they succeeded in rounding up one suspect.

The suspect was subjected to severe thrashing and he succumbed to the injuries.

As suspected accomplices of the alleged scooter-lifter tried to run away from the scene, a Chevrolet car in which they were travelling skidded into a road side drain and car was set ablaze by a group of people.

The deceased suspect has been identified as Md Farooque Ahmad alias Furkan (26) s/o Md Nasib of Lilong Mayai Leikai.

Moirangthem Girani (53) of Tharoijam Awang Leikai and his family members heard repeated barking of their dog at around 3 am today.

As they woke up and went outside they saw one individuals pushing their Honda Activa.

Immediately, they raised an alarm and people of the neighbourhood rushed out.

The next moment, the unidentified man left behind the Honda Active and fled towards the nearby paddy fields.

People of the neighbourhood were joined by people from the neighbouring villages of Patsoi and Taobungkhok and they carried out an extensive search for the man.

In the meantime, one Chevrolet Beat car was found having skidded into a drain along the road leading to Taobungkhok from Tharoijam.

The people seized the car as they suspected that those people who were travelling in the car were accomplices of the fled away scooter lifter.

After an extensive search, Farooque Ahmad was apprehended from the middle of a paddy field.

He was taken to Tharoijam ground and there the mob subjected him to severe thrashing.

He was badly injured when police arrived there.

Even though police took him to RIMS, he succumbed to the injuries.

Charred remains of the Chevrolet Beat car as well as the Honda Activa allegedly lifted by Farooque have been seized by police and a case has been registered at Patsoi police station.

On learning that Girani was being detained at Patsoi police station, people of Tharoijam flocked to the station in the evening.

On the other hand, a public meeting was held at Lilong and a JAC was constituted against the killing of Farooque.
