Remarking that the handloom products of the State are in great demand in other States of India and foreign countries, Commerce and Industries Minister N Mangi called upon the handloom weavers of the State to produce only high quality products.
Speaking as chief guest at the one day seminar on "Market Development of Handloom Clothes" under the aegis of the Commerce and Industries Department, Government of Manipur at Kangla hall, Mangi said that the State Directorate of Commerce and Industries has been implementing the Deen Dayal Hathargha Protsahan Yojana since 2001 under the sponsorship of the Union Govt.The welfare scheme has benefited some weavers of the State, he said while exuding confidence that once the mechanical dying house being constructed under the scheme is commissioned, it would be of immense help to the weavers.
He stressed on the importance of enhancing and maintaining quality of handloom products produced in the State which is known for its unique culture and tradition in order to create a permanent space for the handloom products of the State in the national and international markets.
In the recent Handloom Expo held at Pragati Maidan, Delhi, the State stalls were able to make the biggest sale in handloom products, observed the Minister.
Noting that the Lakshmi Bazar and Purana Bazar have been the exclusive market sheds for handloom products, Mangi said that it is the wish of the both the State Govt and the people to preserve the unique market sheds exclusively for women vendors dealing in handloom products.
In his presidential speech, Principal Secretary, Commerce and Industries PC Lawmkunga informed that the State has been planning to dye yarns with natural extracts in place of chemical substances.
To facilitate marketing of the handloom products produced by the 238 registered handloom societies and other unregistered units, a market complex need to be developed at the earliest, he said.
Later, in the academic session, Dr Ch Priyoranjan of Economics Department, MU and Dr C Ibohal of Manipur Institute of Management Studies presented papers on different topics.
