Murder of Vasmi Khaleng decried

Rape and murder of school going Vasmi Khaleng of Paorei village, Ukhrul by her alleged boyfriend, Wungthem Mawon of Tushen Chanhong village under the same district and abandoning her body at Thangmeiband Cheiraoching is challenge to the women society, leaders of various women bodies have denounced.
Addressing a press conference jointly at BOAT today, leaders of All Manipur Women's Social Reformation and Development Samaj, Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup, Chingmi-Tammi Apunba Nupi Lup and Universal Mothers' Organisation strongly condemned the incident and asserted there has been no let up to rape and murder of women in Manipur as the Government has never punished anyone involved in such cases over the years.
Now that Wungthem Mawon, the alleged murderer of Vasmi Khaleng has been arrested by the police, the Government should ensure punishment of the culprit to the knowledge of the public, the women leaders demanded, adding that they would not remain quiet this time, if the Government fails to award punishment due to any murderer.
Furthermore, the women leaders demanded that statements given by Wungthem Mawon to the police as well as those of the witnesses and other evidences collected in connection with the case of Vasmi Khaleng should be made known to the people, and there should be no room for corruption to let off the culprit.
The four women organisations have also announced their full support to any movement taken up in connection with the murder of Vasmi Khaleng in future.
