"Stations/stops for truck drivers necessary"

Imphal, January 14 2020: Deputy Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly, MLA K Robindro has opined that it is necessary to build certain stations/stops for the truck drivers who are working hard, risking their lives, along the National Highways of the State.

He made the statement during the 31st Drivers Day observation which was organised by All Manipur Petroleum Tankers Drivers Union at Napungkhong community hall, Lairikyengbam Makha Leikai today.

Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Speaker showed respect to the deceased drivers who worked under the union and said that the truck driver work day and night, braving the precarious conditions of the National Highways for the welfare of the people.

Speaking about the hard nature of their work, the Deputy Speaker opined that it will be best to set up resting centres or stops for the driver to catch a breath along their journeys.

He remarked that lack of rest by the drivers are a recipe for potential mishaps and stressed on the need for the driver to stay in tiptop shape and continue serving the public.

The Deputy Speaker continued that the conditions of the roads in Manipur have improved considerably under the State Government led by Chief Minister N Biren Singh and added that the overall situation of the State has also improved as well.

On the other hand, the union president Y Bhupendra Gosh urged the Government to minutely consider the conditions and difficulties faced by the drivers.

He also appealed to all the other unions and associations to provide a chance of employment to the indigenous people of the State.

He then appealed to the authorities concerned to eradicate the illegal elements along the National Highways and cautioned that such elements will gravely affect the driver.

The Government must take up stern actions in time against those collecting illegal taxes along both the Jiribam route and the Dimapur route, he demanded.

IOCL Manipur Manager (Retail Sale) Th Suraj and AMUCO president P Nando Luwang were also present as well.

Drivers Day was also observed by the All Manipur Drivers Welfare Association at Keithelmanbi truck parking today.

The event was attended by Konthoujam Kendra MLA Dr Sapam Ranjan, Sekmai MLA H Dingo, All Manipur Drivers Welfare Association president Samom Ganga Meitei, social worker Th Arunkumar, HITOWA president Laishram Chandrakumar Khuman, AMTCSA president Ngangom Haridash, All Manipur Drivers Welfare Association former president Babudhon Saikhuban as the presidium members.

Similarly, the 31st Drivers' Day was also observed at Wabagai Transport Society Ltd, Wabagai Kadajit today.

As a part of the observation, KADUCO Kakching general secretary M Manishwar, MACHAL Wabagai president H Kishwarjit, Wabagai GP Pradhan Y Hemchand, Sh Dwijamani, M Ranjit, Sh Tamphajao and others paid floral tributes in honour of the deceased drivers of the State.
