State pays homage to drivers on Drivers' Day

The 31st Drivers Day was observed at Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) Dewlahland today under the aegis of the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers' Union.
People paid floral tributes to 263 deceased drivers of the State and a health benefit policy for the highway truck drivers of Manipur called 'Raj Health Wealth+' was also launched during the event.
Giving keynote address during the observation, AMRTD&MWU general secretary Maimom Anil Meitei said that drivers of the State have been braving different types of dangers, risk and difficult terrains in order to ensure adequate supply of essential items and commodities to the people of the State.

The highway truck drivers have been facing threats for armed goons and miscreant along the precarious roads.
They also have to travel along routes which are filled with shaky bridges and deplorable roads, he said, adding that if the CSOs and student organisations of the State stand together with the drivers and pile pressure upon the Government, then the conditions of the drivers will surely improve.
TD &Hills and Fisheries Minister N Kayisii, speaking as the chief guest, lauded AMRTD&MWU for honouring the deceased drivers and celebrating the Drivers' Day.
He said that all should acknowledge the immense contribution of drivers who risk their lives in order to ensure that the people of Manipur get all their daily needs.
Director of Transport, Mercina R Panmei said that people should respect the driver as they put their lives on the line in carrying out their duties.
The economy of the State depends mostly on the roads.
However as most of the roads are in deplorable conditions, they pose numerous risks to drivers, the Director added.
AMRTD&MWU president S Manglem Singh and Chairman & Managing Director of Raj Medicity, North AOC, H Rajen Singh were also present as well.
