An all political party and civil society organization meeting was held at Manipur Press Club today in connection with the increasing crime rate against women and children and for demanding the immediate arrest of Sekmai BJP MLA as well as the people allegedly shielding the rapists involved in Thanga rape incident.
The all political party and civil society organization meeting was organized by Socialist Students Union of Manipur (SSUM), Proletarian Feminist Movement Manipur (PFMM) and Manipur Proletariat Democratic Union (MPDM) .
Speaking to media persons at the event, co-convenor of SSUM, S Yaima said that the meeting was attended by representatives from Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), Manipur Peoples' Party (MPP) and Bahujan Samaj Party but no one from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other parties attended the meeting.
The next round of meeting will be held next Sunday at the same venue, he added.
During the meeting, discussions were held in connection with the increasing number of crimes against women and children in the State and as well as the case of Sekmai BJP MLA.
The co-convenor asked as to why the State police have failed to arrest the Sekmai MLA in connection with the FIR lodged against him by the victim and also asked why the State police are delaying justice to the victim.
On the other hand, speaking about the alleged gang rape case at Thanga which involved five persons, he explained that after a case was lodged, four individuals were arrested and one accused was let free.
Police have failed to arrest the said accused till date, he said and asked if it is due to the high level contact of the family members of the accused that police have failed to arrest him till now.
If such situations continue further then the State will no longer be safe for women and children, he said.
