Imphal, April 08:
A Wakat Meepham has been staged in protest against the ongoing work of dredging the historic Leishang Hiden.
The protest session held under the aegis of JAC Against the Reconstruction of Kyamgei Leishang Hiden from 10 am to 4 pm at Tampha Bazar located in front of the main gate of Manipuri University was participated by women vendors, shop keepers, pattadars and local residents.
Speaking to mediapersons at the occasion, representatives of the JAC asserted that it was only after the Govt had given patta that the people of the area set up the markets and shops to self employed themselves.
So the move being made by the Govt of dredging the canal for the purpose of storing water at the cost of livelihood of so many people is unreasonable.
The protestors also further pointed out that the present effort being made by the Govt would come to nought at the time of expansion of the NH 39 which is bound to affect the canal.
As the the move being made by the Government is also going to affect the academic atmosphere of the schools located along Leishang Hiden, the JAC has also appealed to the students of these schools to extend their support to the JAC.
