Imphal, August 10:
As in previous years, six North East-based underground organizations have decided to boycott Independence Day celebration on August 15 by calling a general strike in the entire region with effect from midnight of August 14 to 5.30 pm of the following day.
In a joint statement, Kamatapur Liberation Organization (KLO), Manipur Peoples' Liberation Front (PREPAK-RPF-UNLF), National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), Tripura Peoples Democratic Front (TPDF) and United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) called upon the people to boycott and prevent the celebration.
In Assam, the general strike would be, however, enforced only in Guwahati in view of the devastating floods in the State, the joint statement said and expressed profound sympathy and solidarity with the flood affected people of Assam.
The joint statement further said that these revolutionary parties/organizations are proud and emboldened by the ongoing struggle of the Manipuri people, particularly the Meira Paibis, against the atrocities of security personnel.
"We congratulate and salute the valiant women of Manipur for taking the traditional vanguard role in the struggle against repression and injustice," the joint statement said, while calling upon the people of the region to express fraternal solidarity with the people of Manipur.
The best way of doing this is to build up their respective democratic struggles against the repression and exploitation.
