The second convention on Promotion of Library Automation and Networking in North Eastern Region, PLANNER-2004 has been inaugurated at the centenary hall of Manipur University today.
The theme of the convention for this year is 'Content Creation, Access and Management in Networking Environment'.
Chairperson of Manipur Human Rights Commission Chief Justice (retired) WA Shishak and Vice Chancellor of Manipur University Prof N Bijoy graced the inaugural function as chief guest and president respectively.
Deputy Director of UGC Bangladesh KM Abdul Ahwal was guest of honour of the function.
In his address, Shishak said we are very much fortunate to live in the century of science and technologies.
With development of latest technologies, promotion of Library Automation and its networking is the need of the hour, he pointed out and added this would help the not only the researchers and scholars of the University but also the general public.
He further appealed to the librarian and his staff of the University to work sincerely in promotion of Library Automation and Networking, so that the University could become one of the best in the country.
Delivering his speech, KM Abdul Ahwal observed that such convention would enable to share opinion and research works among scholars all over the world.
He informed that after the Government of India has initiated development of library and information technology in Bangladesh since 1992, plans are afoot now to launch a Union Electronic Library.
Giving the presidential address, Bijoy said library has a great role to play in providing knowledge to the people.
Library professionals have even greater responsibility in assisting the people in finding the right kind of information they are looking for.
Many well qualified librarians and scholars from different parts of India and Bangladesh are participating in the two-day convention.
