ASER report details status of rural schools

Even as the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 has provisioned the compulsory presence of playground and boundary wall in every school, only 41.7 percent of schools in rural areas of Manipur have playground while an abysmal 6.4 percent have boundary walls.
These figures are against the national average of 62.6 percent of schools having playground and 54.1 percent having boundary walls, according to the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), 2011 prepared and surveyed under the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
Significantly, the percentage of students' enrolment in private schools from the age group of 6 to 14 is pegged at 71.6 .
ASER seeks to find out data about the status of primary schools and students enrolment in private and Government run schools.
ASER team had conducted a survey in 2011 in the eight districts of the State excluding Senapati district on over 8,680 students covering 738 primary schools, 4,738 households, and 222 villages.
According to the provisional survey report on North Eastern states which was released yesterday, 65.8 percent of schools in Arunachal Pradesh have playground and 34.2 schools have boundary wall.
In Assam, 56.5 percent of schools have playground while 23.3 percent of schools have boundary walls.
39.5 percent of schools in Meghalaya have playground whereas 13.9 percent of schools have boundary walls.
In Mizoram 70.7 percent of schools have playground and 47.8 percent of them have boundary walls.
In Nagaland, 65.6 percent of schools have playground while 35.9 percent have boundary walls.
86.5 percent of schools in Sikkim have playground while 27.8 percent of them have boundary walls.
The percentage of schools having playground in Tripura is pegged at 78.7 while the percentage of schools having boundary walls is put at 25.6 .
Significantly, the percentage of students' enrolment in private schools from the age group of 6 to 14 is pegged at 71.6 .
