Handloom Expo kick-starts

A 15-day long National Handloom Expo 2014, which is being organized under the aegis of Managing Director Manipur Handloom & Handicraft Development Corporation Ltd in collaboration with Development Commissioner Handlooms, Ministry of Textile, Government of India began from today at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound here.
The inauguration function was attended by B John Tlangtinkhuma, Director of Commerce & Industries, Government of Manipur as Chief Guest; V Tualthang, former Addl Director of Commerce & Industries as President while Sandeep P Thubrikar, Addl Director (Weaving)/Officer-in-Charge of Weavers' Service Centre, Ministry of Textile; W Nilamani, former Managing Director of Manipur Handloom & Handicraft and Chingtam Luwang, president of Handloom Promotion Council as Guests of Honour.

Speaking on the occasion, B John Tlangtinkhuma lauded handloom weavers and buyers for making handloom and handicraft industry as one of the fastest growing industries in the State and pointed out that more than 60 percent population of the State depends on the industry for livelihood.
He stated that the State Government has been providing all possible helps and implementing schemes to enhance handloom and handicraft industry and generate more jobs for unemployed people of the State.
V Tualthang said the handloom and handicraft industry of the State with its fine and unique products has won hearts of people of the country as well as of other countries and added that the Central Government has been taking up schemes and measures to expand the market of the industry in the State.
A total of 61 stalls are taking part in the handloom expo.
