Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has congratulated Manipur Renewable Energy Development Agency (MANIREDA) and appreciated the successful installation of solar lighting system in 200 remote villages.
The Chief Minister was speaking as chief guest at the Renewable Energy Day observance specifically organised on the 68th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at Public School, Koirengei today.
Significantly, the Chief Minister is also the Chairman of MANIREDA.
In view of the fast depleting non-renewable energy resources across the earth, more and more countries are focusing their attention on renewable energy.
In Manipur, MANIREDA has achieved commendable progress in the field of harnessing renewable energy.
MANIREDA has been benefiting people, particularly those residing in remote villages by generating power from solar energy, wind and biomass.
In addition, MANIREDA has installed solar lighting system in some hospitals and offices of Deputy Commissioners.
The agency has already started distributing 3340 water heaters to the public.
Once these water heaters are put into use, at least 5 MW of electricity can be saved.
The Chief Minister also appealed to the mass to support MANIREDA in its various activities and projects.
In his presidential speech, Education Minister M Okendro proposed replacement of conventional electric bulbs with CFL bulbs in order to save energy.
He also suggested to provide solar lighting system to all the 4,92,610 MGNREGS job-card holders of the State for which 10 per cent of the cost price should be borne by respective MLAs while the remaining 90 per cent may be deducted from their wages.
On the occasion of late Rajiv Gandhi's birth anniversary, altogether 87 students who secured outstanding marks in class X examination conducted by CBSE and BSEM, and another 11 students of Manipur Public School were given one solar lamp each.
A documentary film produced by MANIREDA was also screened on the occasion.
The birth anniversary function of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was also observed at Congress Bhavan under the aegis of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee.
The main feature of the function was offering of floral tributes to the photograph of Rajiv Gandhi and it was led by MPCC president Gaikhangam.
The function was also attended by a number of Congress MLAs and office bearers.
