Mayang Imphal locals clash with cops

Police fired several rounds of tear gas shell to disperse local protesters and JAC members who stormed Mayang Imphal police station demanding the unconditional release of a person who was pulled up by the police at about 12.30 am today in connection with the lynching of two youths by a mob recently.
Large number of irate locals of Mayang Imphal Thongkhong and JAC members stormed the Mayang Imphal police station soon after they came to know that one Khagembam Ibungo (43) s/o (L) Achouba of Mayang Imphal Thongmakhong has been pulled up by the police.
According to the police officer of Imphal police station, Khagembam Ibungo was pulled up for questioning.
Ibungo is said to be the owner of the Activa Moped which three youths reportedly attempted to steal resulting in the lynching of two of them.
The angry locals and JAC members despite the CrPC 144 imposed by the DC Imphal West came out in large number and carried out the protest in front of Mayang Imphal police station along Mayai Lambi.
A large number of police personnel deployed in the area swung into action to prevent any untoward incident.
After s solution evaded the two parties, a confrontation broke out between the police and protesters at Mayang Imphal bazar area.
Local protesters pelted stones and resorted to the use of slingshot.
Police fired tear gas shells and mock bombs in retaliation.
The confrontation lasted for about 10 minutes.
Police later pushed all the protesters back to their respective area and brought the situation under control.
Speaking to mediapersons, S Mohan member of the JAC against supporters of thieves at Sangai Sabi Mayang Imphal said that if Khagembam Ibungo, owner of the Activa Moped, is not released without condition they will not remain silent and will launch various forms of agitation.
He also warned the State Government not to arrest five individuals who were allegedly involved in the mob incident which led to the death of two youths.
He said the mob did not comprise of the five persons alone.
He also said that all of a sudden the mob was formed soon after the thieves were caught.
He stated that if the Government bows to the pressure of another group and arrest the five persons then the JAC along with other bodies will not remain silent and take out various forms of agitation and the Govt will be held responsible for any outcome.
Mayai Lambi road remained deserted as most of the passenger service vehicles and other private vehicles remained off the roads while all the shops and business establishments remained closed at Mayang Imphal area.
Police personnel in large number were seen deployed at various important junctions of Mayang Imphal area to prevent any kind of untoward incident in the area.
Four companies of CRPF, two companies of IRB, one company of Mahila Battalion IRB, commandos from Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal and Bishnupur have been stationed in the area.
