Guwahati, June 06 2016:
A day after asking Opposition parties not to play "cheap" politics on the issue of Bangladeshi influx, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday asked the Border Security Force (BSF) to ensure sealing of the Indo Bangladesh border on a war footing.
Sealing the Indo-Bangladesh border is top priority for the BJP-led Government that has just come to power in Assam.
Chairing a high-level meeting with the top brass of the BSF, led by its Director General KK Sharma, at his office in Guwahati, Sonowal asked the border sentinels to ensure erection of fencing expeditiously for a safe and fool-proof border with the neighbouring country.
He also asked the BSF to make use of "smart technological solutions" like laser walls and surveillance gadgets to keep security at the frontiers at all times.
The Chief Minister also asked the BSF to remove all challenges coming in the way of ensuring a secured border at the earliest.
"It is a part of our pledge that we will completely seal international border with Bangladesh in order to keep infiltration and smuggling from across the border at bay," he said.
Referring to BSF's observation that a 42-km stretch of the Indo-Bangladesh border in the Dhubri sector is "challenging", Sonowal assured all help from the State Government, including technological solutions, to seal border and keep the State free from infiltration.
Assam shares only 263 kms of the 4096 kms of international boundary between India and Bangladesh.
