Imphal, January 28 2021:
Until the Government reaches an agreement with the Konsakhul village, the construction work of the National Sports University (NSU) should be put on hold, said villagers and Konsakhul Area JAC today blocking the road with fence.
Asserting that "the NSU shall not be built without the consent of the village", the protest has been on since yesterday with locals blocking the village road with fences and trees.
During the protest, Konsakhul Women Society executive member Athem Chawang said, "Bringing the National Sports University here is good, but it can't be built without the consent of the Konsakhul village which owns the site" .
Repeated appeals were made to the authorities concerned to construct the NSU with the consent of the village.
As the appeals fell on deaf ears, the protest was launched, she said, adding that more stringent agitation will be launched if the Government did not reach an agreement with the Konsakhul village.
Konsakhul Area JAC advisor Adonpao Abonmei also said that the construction work should be stopped unless an agreement is reached.
Registering their protest, the villagers confiscated the key of a JCB vehicle used in the construction site yesterday.
"The Konsakhul village is proud of the NSU.
But if the university is to be built in the land of the village, the authorities concerned should take the consent of the village," he said.
