Locals of Sagolband Moirang Leirak today staged a sit-in protest against serving monetary demand to Maisnam Biramani, programme executive of the All India Radio, Imphal by an underground group and threatening him to fulfill the demand.
A particular underground group is demanding Rs 2 lakh from the Biramani, according to the locals participating in the sit-in protest which was started at about 10.30 am and went on till around 4 pm.
In the sit-in protest organised by the Morang Leirak Apunba Meira Paibi at Sagolband Moirang Leirak Akham ground, various slogans decrying the act of the underground, the protestors appealed to let the person working in a media house be allowed to discharge his duty freely and asking not to break the tranquility of the people were displayed.
Local sources said that around a week back, Biramani received a demand letter from the underground Military Defense Force (MDF) to pay Rs 2 lakh to the group within five days period.
The group also provided a mobile telephone number to contact them.
Biramani so far did not given any reply as apart from a person working in a media house, he is living with the meager income he gets from the job.
Meanwhile, last night, at about 10.30 pm, two unknown youths came to the house of the Biramani and asked the reason behind not giving any reply with regard to the demand served by the group.
They also enquire on about informing the matter to the police.
However, the two youths left the place soon on seeing some locals coming to the house by giving warning that they were coming to serve last warning on the demand served by them.
Owing to the last night incident, the families of Biramani were feeling apprehension of any untoward incidents in future, womenfolk participating in the protest said.
