Moreh, April 19 2020:
Even as the Indo-Myanmar border was sealed completely to curb border trade amidst the coronavirus outbreak, most shops in the border town and other parts of the State are 'still selling items' of Myanmar origin discretely at steeper prices.
Weeks after the complete lockdown was imposed, items such as Win, betel leaves, plastic bags, rice and Godzilla mosquito repellant etc are still available and they are on sale in many shops, said some locals at the border town questioning the effectiveness of the measures being taken up to curb smuggling in of goods.
"If the sealing of border was effective, the items should have been out of shelves by now.
Win is still available in many shops.
A pack of Win (cigarette) is being sold as high as Rs 80 in shops.
This means people are still smuggling in Myanmar goods despite the border being sealed," said a local who said Government and authorities concerned should mend the porous border areas.
It may be noted that recently, three persons were arrested by Churachandpur police for smuggling in fuel from Myanmar.
