Bob Khathing remembered on his 25th Death Anniversary

Imphal, January 12 2015: The 25th Death Anniversary of Major Ralengnao Bob Khathing was observed at Valley View, Mantripukri on Monday.

The occasion was marked by recollection of the late Major's valour and deeds during his days.

Dignitaries including Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam; Deputy Speaker Preshow Shimray; ex-MP Rishang Keishing; ex-CM Radhabinod Koijam; RK Nimai, Consultant to Government of Manipur; Parliamentary Secretary Victor Keishing and Major General (IGAR South), Rajiv Chopra.

They paid floral tributes to the portrait of the deceased hero as a mark of respect to the departed soul.

In connection with the observance function, Dy CM Gaikhangam presented meritorious awards to five students who secured high marks in Class XII and graduation examination.

Speaking on the occasion, Gaikhangam recalled that Bob Khating was an outstanding person who had received several awards including Padmashri in recognition of his influential contributions towards building of the nation.

He acknowledged the unique personalities possessed by the late Major while adding that he felt honored to participate in the death anniversary function of the legend.

Conceding that Bob Khating was a kind of extraordinary person easy to socialize, the Dy CM maintained that the late Major could continue to be an icon symbolizing bravery and introducing Ukhrul district.

People should always remember the notable sacrifices made by Bob Khathing and follow footsteps adopted by the legendary personality, he added.

Gaikhangam went on to say that the late Major had also worked for establishment of a cordial relationship between the people of hills and valley.

Bob Khathing was born on February 28, 1912 to a humble tribal home in Ukhrul.

He had a vibrant army and civil career to retire as Ambassador of India to Myanmar (1972-75) .

As a young King's Commission Officer of the Indian Army during WW-II, he was commissioned to the 19th Hyderabad Regiment which became Kumaon Regiment but was soon deployed to 'V' force Ops as Local Captain, Manipur Sector to operate behind enemy lines in the Burma Front.

Amongst the many gallantry awards he received, he was conferred with the Member of the British Empire (MBE) and the Military Cross (MC) .

He breathed his last at his home at Valley View, Mantripukhri on January 12, 1990 .
