Women activists attack rape/murder accused

Imphal, January 12 2015:
A large number of womenfolk and family members of rape/murder victims today created ruckus at Cheirap Court complex on two different occasions when the accused of different criminal cases were produced before the Court.
The first incident happened at around 11 am when rape accused and tuition teacher Nongthombam Varun of Urup Litan Makhong was guided towards prisoners' van after he was remanded to judicial custody till January 27 .
Mother of the minor victim along with other family members shouted at the accused and threw slippers towards him.
However, police managed to take away the accused in the prisoners' van.
On the otherhand, as Court proceedings were adjourned for the day on account of an emergency condolence meeting of former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, RK Manisana, trial of the rape and murder case of a RIMS research scholar has been deferred till January 27 .
Later at around 2 pm, a large number of womenfolk and JAC members tried to attack Md Abdul Qadir alias Amuthi alias Amu (29) of Hiyangthang Pallak Chan-dranadi, who has been accus- ed of murdering a woman who used to vend vegetables at Hiyangthang Keithel.
After absconding for many months, Amuthi was arrested by a team of Imphal West women police station on January 1 .
The woman was found brutally murdered on September 19 last year.
Soon after the prisoners' van carrying Amuthi arrived at the Court complex, the crowd attacked the vehicle by pelting stones.
Police kept Amuthi inside the vehicle till the crowd was pushed back.
However, some angry people ran after Amuthi and tried to beat him up when he was brought down from the vehicle.
However, police escorted him fast inside the Court room and closed the doors preventing entry of the protesters.
After Amuthi was produced before the Court under Section 365/302/376/201 and 34 IPC, he was remanded to judicial custody till January 24 .
He was brought out of the Courtroom only after additional security team were called in and protesters pushed back outside the Court complex.
It may be mentioned that Amuthi was on the run after the woman was found murdered on September 19 last year.
However, he was arrested from Kshetrigao Thambalkhong at around 2 am of January 1 .
