Reiterating its stand, MEELAL has today said that the number plates of all vehicles should be written in Meitei Mayek and warned that violators will be held responsible for any untoward incident from July 26.The last date for fulfilling the same is July 25.To enable the people to get their number plates written in Meitei Mayek, nine centres have also been opened said MEELAL.
Speaking to the press, president of MEELAL, Ng Yumjao said that though teaching Meitei Mayek upto class III has been made mandatory and even included in the Government gazette, nothing much has been done to promote the indigenous script by the Government.
Citing examples, Yumjao said that the Government has not bothered to put the Mayek on the Government institutions and the newly finished constructions as well.
The Mayek has not been inscribed on the board of the BT flyover too, he added.
Since the deadline for putting the Mayek on number plates, sign boards, banners etc is July 25, MEELAL will initiate its own course of intense action if there are any violators from July 26 morning.
For Imphal area, nine centres have opened to get the number plates of vehicles inscribed with Meitei Mayek, he informed and added that the service charge will be minimal.

The centres will be opened from tomorrow and the people can avail the service from tomorrow morning till July 25, informed the MEELAL leader.
Laying down the guidelines, MEELAL said that if the people want to carry the Roman script along with Meitei Mayek, then the same should be put on the front plate as well as the rear plate.
On the other hand, if the people desire only the Meitei Mayek, then they may put up the same either on the front plate or the rear plate.
Government vehicles will also come under the conditions imposed.
