Senapati, CCpur teams emerge champions in Sepoy K Ashuli VrC Open Volleyball Tournament

The Late Sepoy K Ashuli, VrC Open Volleyball Tournament concluded on Friday at Mini Stadium, Senapati, marking the end of a five-day celebration of sport, unity, and remembrance.
Jointly organised by the Assam Rifles and the Senapati District Olympic Association, Manipur (SDOAM), the tournament honoured the valour and legacy of Sepoy K Ashuli - a native of the district and a Vir Chakra recipient - who laid down his life during the 1999 Kargil War.
The tournament served as a heartfelt tribute to Sepoy Ashuli, whose extraordinary bravery continues to inspire generations.
His sacrifice was commemorated not merely through words, but through spirited competition that brought together athletes from across Manipur.
The tournament was participated by 10 men's teams and 8 women's teams from Senapati, Churachandpur, Ukhrul, and Kangpokpi districts.
The event demonstrated the unifying power of sport and the shared pride in honouring a hero of the land.
Colonel Sandeep Sharma, commandant of 16 Assam Rifles, Maram Battalion, addressed the gathering during the closing ceremony.
In his remarks, he emphasised the significance of the tournament in paying tribute to a courageous son of Senapati.
Reflecting on Sepoy Ashuli's role in the Kargil conflict, Colonel Sharma described his actions as exceptional - the kind of heroism few are capable of.
He acknowledged the many unsung heroes of the war and expressed hope that such tributes would help keep their memories alive.
He added that Sepoy Ashuli's legacy continues to inspire the people of Senapati and beyond, urging all present to carry forward his spirit by striving for excellence in their own pursuits.
Referring to the statue unveiled in his honour, Colonel Sharma noted that while it could never fully represent the tears shed by his loved ones, it would stand as a lasting symbol of his sacrifice - one that would inspire future generations.
In the men's final, Senapati Sporting Club delivered a commanding performance, defeating Brotherhood Volleyball Club (Churachandpur) in straight sets (3-0).In the women's final, Hoivah Memorial Team (Churachandpur) emerged victorious over Senapati Sporting Club with a 3-1 win.
Both games served as fitting conclusions to a tournament marked by passion, camaraderie, and sportsmanship.
Individual accolades were awarded to outstanding players in both categories.
In the women's tournament, Lhingneithem (Hoivah Memorial Team) was named best spiker, Ruby (Senapati Sporting Club) received the best setter award, and Beveinai (Senapati Sporting Club) was honoured as player of the tournament.
In the men's competition, the titles went to Ibrahim Wang (Senapati Sporting Club) as best spiker, Pausiamlian (Brotherhood Volleyball Club) as best setter, and Sakil (Senapati Sporting Club) as player of the tournament.
A statue of the late Sepoy K Ashuli, VrC, was unveiled on the occasion by his son, A Hriiyio, along with the commandant of the Maram Battalion, Assam Rifles.
Following the official proceedings, a special cultural performance by Liihva Kyapaomai captivated the audience, adding a meaningful and artistic touch to the closing ceremony.
Joram Koveo, president of the Senapati District Olympic Association, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Colonel Sharma and the 16 Assam Rifles for their unwavering support to the people of Senapati.
He highlighted the importance of such events in fostering unity through sport and acknowledged the contributions of all participating teams, whose involvement made the tournament a resounding success.
