NFC for Santosh Trophy : Ph Sanathoi scores twice as Manipur cruise past Uttar Pradesh 6-2

Imphal, October 10 2023: Manipur eased to a 6-2 victory over Uttar Pradesh for the second win in the 77th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy 2023-24 Group C at Vijay Singh Pathik Stadium, Greater Noida today.

Ph Sanathoi starred in the match scoring a goal each side of the break.

Manipur started dominantly and raced to a 3-0 first half lead with Wangkhei-mayum Sadananda Singh handing the lead in the 5th minute into the game with a left footer from close range following a free kick before Phijam Sanathoiba doubled the advantage in the 34th minute and Thiyam Chingkheinganba scored two minutes into the added time.

Uttar Pradesh pulled back a goal through Krishan Kumar who converted a penalty in the 51st minute but Khundom Lucky regained Manipur the three goal lead in the 64th minute as he made the most of another penalty of the game before Phijam Sanathoi had his double in the 71st minute to make it 5-1 .

Yashraj Thapa of Uttar Pradesh struck in the 75th minute to make it 2-5 before Adityaraj Singh fumbled and conceded an own goal in the 86th minute to give Manipur a 6-2 lead and eventually the win.

On October 10, Manipur kicked off the group campaign with a 1-0 win against Tamil Nadu.

In other Group C matches, Nagaland who opened the group campaign with a 3-0 win over Madhya Pradesh trounced Jharkhand 6-0 for the second straight victory at Bennett University Ground.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu drubbed Madhya Pradesh 4-0 at Vijay Singh Pathik Stadium later in the afternoon.

Manipur will play Nagaland who are on top with two convincing victories in the next match on October 12.The match starts at 3.30 pm at Vijay Singh Pathik Stadium.
