Imphal, September 28 2025:
Joining the rest of the world, the Directorate of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Services, Manipur, observed World Rabies Day 2025 under the global theme "Act Now: You, Me and Community" at the Farmers' Training Hall, Veterinary Complex, Sanjenthong.
As per a release issued by the Directorate of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Services, a solemn function was organised to commemorate this day under the National One Health Programme for Prevention & Control of Zoonoses.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr RK Khogendrajit Singh, Director, Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Services, highlighted the urgent need for collective efforts in preventing and controlling rabies, stressing that the theme reflects the shared responsibility of every individual, family, and community in safeguarding both human and animal health.
He underlined that rabies is 100 percent fatal yet 100 percent preventable if timely vaccination, awareness measures and intervention are undertaken.
He urged all to ensure pets are up to date on their rabies vaccination and to seek immediate medical attention for timely post exposure prophylaxis in case of any exposure, even in cases of minor scratch or abrasion without bleeding.
He emphasised the need for the same with the growing trend of pet ownership leading to an increase in dog and pet populations.
The Director also reiterated that the Department has been providing antirabies vaccines (ARV) free of cost throughout the year in all Veterinary Hospitals and Dispensaries, reaffirming its commitment to the long-term elimination of rabies in the State.
He concluded that by vaccinating pets, spreading awareness, and supporting government initiatives, the community can collectively ensure a rabies-free Manipur, making the vision of "Zero by 2030" set by World Health Organisation a reality.
As part of the observance, a special anti-rabies vaccination camp was held at the State Veterinary Hospital, Sanjenthong and pamphlets were also distributed for mass awareness.
Similar free vaccination and awareness programmes were actively conducted across all District Veterinary Offices, ensuring widespread participation and outreach at the grassroots level.
