The practice of female foeticide after pre-determination of sex is still prevalent in Manipur, if not overtly, principal of Imphal Art College Y Nabachandra Singh has stated.
He was talking to mediapersons on the sideline of the art exhibition which was inaugurated from today at Imphal Art Gallery today.
The works of 10 final year students of Imphal Art College are being put up for display in the exhibition which would go on till January 23.The selected students would participate in the 1st National Painting Competition to be organised jointly by the Centre for Media and Delhi College of Art under the sponsorship of United Nations Population Fund, India.
The theme of the National Competition (Art for Social Change Award) is 'Delighting in Daughters'.
Talking to mediapersons in connection with the exhibition, Nabachandra said the underlying theme is stop discrimination against daughters and accord equal status to both men and women in the society.
He also expressed serious concern over the prevalence of female foeticide in Manipur society after pre-sex determination despite being illegal.
A girl child is also being looked down up and discriminated upon, he added.
Director of Art and Culture Sorojini who was also present at the occasion, expressed happiness over the fact that students of the Imphal Art College would be able to participate in the competition at the National level.
He also disclosed that the State Government has extended a provision of Rs 3 crores from State Plan Assistance for construction of the building of Imphal Art College.
