Guwahati molestation : National Commission for Women (NCW) drops one

New Delhi, July 17 2012: The turn of events in the aftermath of the widely telecast video footage of the molestation of a Guwahati teenage girl publicly by a mob of about 20 men on July 9, saw the resignation of the News Live TV reporter (who recorded the incident) and subsequently the Editor-in-Chief of the TV channel and now it has taken a new turn with the National Commission for Women dropping a 'member' from its team.

While the fact finding report by the National Commission for Women (NCW) is still yet to come out, Alka Lamba, who was one of the team members of the fact finding committee that went to Guwahati on July 14 has been removed from the team.

Reportedly, Alka Lamba held a press conference in Guwahati during the visit.

Lamba was also reported to have given out the real name of the victim.

Subsequently the Women Commission had apologised for the same.

NCW chairperson stated that Alka Lamba was never a member of the commission.

Therefore she has no authority, she told media persons today.

Mamta Sharma, Chairperson of the Commission is slated to visit Guwahati tomorrow.

She will meet Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and interact with the Assam local media persons.

The Chairperson will release the Commission's finding report and recommendations in Guwahati.

The NCW chief also underlined the need for media 'sensitivity' in such cases as in the molestation of the Guwahati teenager.

The Women Commission also accused police inaction in the incident which went on for over half an hour.

"They came after 40 minutes" said the NCW chief.

Till today 11 persons have been arrested, all of whom were identified from the video footage.

The main accused is still absconding.

An official brief from the office of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's has been reported to give out the identity of the victim.

Moreover RTI activist Akhil Gogoi have strongly come out in condemnation of the reporter and its Channel alleging " instigation" of the act.

Gogoi alleged that the channel reporter who was later joined by a colleague , together had 'organised the incident' .
