Imphal, June 17 2025:
Even as five months have passed since the death of N Kayisii on January 18 last, the Tadubi Assembly seat still remains conspicuously vacant.
Following the death of Kayisii, the Manipur State Assembly had officially declared the Tadubi Assembly Constituency seat vacant, yet, months later, the byelection remains nowhere in sight.
With no MLA in place, people of Tadubi have been facing numerous challenges, as they lack a representative to voice their concerns or address local issues.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, a person well-versed in State Assembly affairs stated that an Assembly seat cannot remain vacant for an extended period and must be filled within six months, as per established protocols.
Although not mandatory it is also customary to issue the notification for holding an election at least one month in advance, preferably 45 days.
The Tadubi seat is now nearing the end of the sixmonth deadline, with the vacancy set to complete the six-month mark on July 17.Although the Election Commission has not issued any directive to hold the byelection, the authorities in Manipur have already begun taking measures such as publishing the final electoral roll and randomising electronic voting machines (EVMs) to conduct it, he said.
Another source said that a by-election may not be required within six months of a vacancy if the Assembly's term is set to expire in less than a year or if the Election Commission and the Central Government deem it inadvisable to hold the election.
Meanwhile, veteran politician O Joy said that the Central Government may be assessing the situation to determine whether the election for the vacant seat can be held.
