CME on "Screening Today, Saving Tomorrow: Unveiling IMDs" held

A Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on the theme, "Screening Today, Saving Tomorrow: Unveiling Inherited Metabolic Disorders" was successfully conducted today at Banting Hall, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal.
The CME was organised by the Department of Biochemistry, RIMS, Imphal, in association with the Association of Clinical Chemistry & Laboratory Medicine Practitioners (ACCLMP), Manipur State Chapter.
The inaugural function was graced by Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director, RIMS; Prof N Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent; Prof L Rajesh Singh, Dean (Academics); and Prof Laikangbam Shaini, Head, Department of Biochemistry as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof G Sunil Kumar announced that RIMS has been recognised as the 13th Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
He stated that the Department of Biochemistry will lead rare disease screening with clinical support, and that high-end equipment is expected to arrive by mid-2026.Emphasizing early detection, preventive medicine, and collaboration, he urged the participants to apply their learning to improve patient care and community health.
The CME aimed to raise awareness of Inherited Metabolic Disorders (IMDs), highlighting early screening and diagnosis.
Participants included faculty, medical professionals, postgraduate students, and laboratory practitioners.
Resource persons from across the country delivered insightful talks on a wide range of topics such as medical ethics, tandem mass spectrometry in newborn screening, generic drug quality, genetic research, clinical red flags of IEM, neonatal care, maternal education, molecular aspects of IEM, and procalcitonin in cystic fibrosis.
A panel discussion on the theme "Transforming Outcomes Through Early Metabolic Screening Initiatives" was also held, providing valuable insights into advancing early detection and management strategies for inherited metabolic disorders.
