As a part of its campaign to spread Meetei script to the masses, Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) will publish Meitei script versions of some important books and make them available to the students of the State, said MEELAL president Ngasepam Yumjao at a press meet conducted at its office today.
He added that a dictionary of Meitei script will also be published shortly.
Yumjao informed that May 18 will be observed as Mayek Chatpa Numit to commemorate Government's approval to start teaching Meitei script in the State.
Essay competitions and release of souvenir will mark the occasion, he added.
Listing their achievements, Yumjao said that computer unicode will be made based the approved 27 letters of the script, while printing of the labels of Meitei script on eatable packets are in full swing.
Vehicle number plates and private clinic banners now include Meitei script, he added.
Yumjao also thanked petrol pumps and Government offices to extend their support in this venture.
Taking part in the press meet, secretary general Naokhomba Meetei said that the Lup will launch a teaching campaign of the script from the first week of May.
For this, a coaching class, which can be taken part by all sections of the society, will be conducted at Uripok Tourangbam Leikai.
Maintaining that there are some spelling mistakes in the news items published in Meitei script on various vernacular dailies, Naokhamba also appealed the media persons of the State to take part in the said class.
The coaching class will be conducted in four batches by the Lup in association with VLTV Electronic Media and Jananeta Hijam Irabot Memorial Trust, he added.
Naokhamba further said that all the rickshaw numbers will also be written in Meitei script on the foundation day celebration of All Manipur Rickshaw Pullers and Drivers Association at GM Hall on April 17.He also requested the rickshaw owners not to take hiring charges from the drivers on this day.
Taking part in the press meet, Vice President of the Lup, Sadokpam Tomba Mangang requested to print in bold letters in all the packets of any product.
He also requested to include the script, atleast a line in all Government and private letter heads, DO letters, receipts, tickets and electronic and print media advertisements.
