Dr Ungshungmi A Shimray remembered

Along with a lecture programme, the second memorial event of Dr Ungshungmi A Shimray (1971-2009), who was more popularly known as UA among his friends, was observed by friends at Tribal Research Institute at Chingmeirong here today.
The memorial lecture was delivered by Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, Associate Professor at the School of Social Sciences, JNU New Delhi on the theme 'Negotiating Identity Politics: Crafting the future of a fractured fraternity" with Dr Walter Fernandes, Founder and Outgoing Director of North East Social Research Center, Guwahati as chairperson and Dr Achan Mungleng, Homen Thangjam, Ram Wangkheirakpam, Joyson Mazamo and Xonzoi (Sanjay) Barbora as Panelists.
The memorial programme commenced with a photographic slide show giving glimpses of Dr UA's life and works and it was followed by speeches from family and friends.
Guru Rewben Mashangva also presented a heartrending song,"Song of the Hornbill" composed by himself and dedicated to Dr UA.
Dr UA was a student of Centre for the study of regional development (CSRD), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.
He produced some of the finest work on issues that are critical to people's lives and public discourse, especially in understanding the vital linkages between land rights and the political existence of peoples.
During his short academic span (2000-2009) he published three books, numerous articles and left behind many unfinished works.
